Better Energy Effeciency by Adding Insulation To Your Home!
Insulation
You can’t see it, but the insulation in your home plays a critical role. It minimizes the transfer of energy in and out of your home. This means it helps to keep your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It also means less money out of your pocket to maintain your comfort.
An additional benefit to insulation is its sound absorbing properties. The insulation in the exterior walls of your home can help keep the noisy world out and give you peace for a good nights sleep. Insulation in interior walls and ceiling can also help isolate bedrooms from busywork going on elsewhere in the house.
Contrary to popular belief, the exterior walls and the attic aren’t the only areas of your home that should be insulated for heat retention. If you have a floor above an unheated area such as a porch or garage, you should have it insulated. Basement walls also benefit from insulation.
An experienced insulation installer will be able to tell you where to insulate and what R-value to use. The R-value is a measurement of resistance to heat flow. A higher R-value means better insulating properties. You don’t necessarily want the maximum R-value everywhere though. Let your installer be your guide. They will also be familiar with what is required by code.
The most common insulation today is made of fiber glass and for good reason. Because of its construction, fiberglass is naturally fire resistant. It also resists soaking up moisture which is a good thing. Wet insulation loses its effectiveness. Fiberglass does not settle like some other insulation materials and this means better functionality as well. Finally, because it is primarily made from sand, fiberglass is abundant.
